How does one buy a used trumpet without getting ripped off? What are the things to check for?

Q: I am thinking about purchasing a trumpet for personal use (Maybe eventually to play in church but that is a long term goal. What are the bad brands and what do I check for to make sure I will get an instrument that will last?

A: I played the sax in high school but I can tell you that when looking for a trumpet you want to make sure the slides aren't bent or damaged and when lubricated they should slide in and out with ease. You also want to make sure that the keys (there's 3 of them) go up and down without a problem and the most important thing (to me anyway) is you want to make sure the spit valve works! It lets the spit out and that's something you don't want building up in your trumpet because it will stink eventually.

And the obvious thing is you want to make sure the sound is good. If you don't yet know how to play the trumpet then the music shop owner should be able to at least blow it for you. Also, I bought my sax used and it did just as good as the new ones so unless you have your heart set on a brand new one then a used one is a good option. However, if you get a used one, I would invest in a new mouth piece or if you can't afford that, then BOIL the old one and then soak it in some bleach water (just put enough bleach to disinfect, you don't need a lot. Then rinse well. You definitely want to be sure to get all the nasties off!!

Don't forget you will need to buy oil to keep the slides lubricated and a polishing cloth to keep your trumpet shiny.

If you haven't yet learned how to play the trumpet, then I would recommend the alto saxophone. I had a blast playing it and wish I could've continued through college. Although trumpets are good too. :)

It's really difficult to find things on here that are reasonable. I would suggest check out as many local pawn shops you can and ask them to play it or you play it and see if it sounds right.

Also, search ebay. If anyone is going to have some inexpensive it will be then. Look at what brands sell the most and what is the best one according to who helped tou at the store

First thing, however, would be to go online and see which type/brand is both the best and won't drain you of any money.Search the internet at local stores and walk through the Mall to get a price.

Always take a scary looking friend with you.(kidding) Another step would be to go music stores and just ask them what are the best brands. I'm sure there a lot of people who would love to hear you knowledge. play In turn they could help you get a new trumpet.

I wish you the best. if I had one I'd give it to You fpr free:)

Tyler Tryon of AHS makes All-State band for fourth year Dallas Morning News (blog)

"You will not be a good player without the practice and instruction from good teachers," he said, crediting his private tutor from his freshman year, Karen Fought, with much of his early success. "She was behind me all the way."

Tyler is looking at three colleges - Brigham Young University, the University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University - to continue his education. No matter where he goes, though, music will be the focus.

"I'm planning on majoring in music and I want to be involved in the college band," he said, although his ultimate career goals center on the medical field.

Tyler attended Anderson Elementary and Curtis Middle School and he said his experiences in the Allen ISD and its Fine Arts programs have been a great experience.

"When I think of being in the band, I think about all the people I have been able to play with and what a pleasure it has been to play with them," he said.

Tyler will join three other Allen High School musicians in performing for the 2010 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention on February 10-13 at San Antonio's Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. The other Allen All-Staters are Nick Brown, a senior alto saxophonist (his second All-State honor), junior Jeremy Ryan, alto saxophone and Helen Xiong, freshman, clarinet.
