Must you own a silver trumpet to march for the Ohio State University?

Q: Im looking at buying a new trumpet. Its my senior year of high school and Im considering marching for OSU. The problem is I really like this brass trumpet and I think you need a silver to march. What should I buy?

A: You really should check with the band director of the OSU marching band. If they really need for you to have a silver trumpet -- being the slaves to "brass" fashion as we are -- you better get that silver trumpet. This is a very highly reputable marching band and I think and they may be sticklers for how they look on the field.

This is a shame I guess. Given that two trumpets are the same model but come in brass laquer or silver-plated options, the difference between brass and silver-plated is just the timbre of a pitch, not the tone quality.

Again, even us musicians are slaves to fashion when it comes to brass versus silver.
