How can I find and choose a good Piccolo trumpet?

Q: I am looking for a good piccolo trumpet. I live close to Chicago and the Schilke factory is in melrose park close by. Isin't Schilke supposed to have good ones. What other brands are good?

A: Yes, many professionals consider the Schilke piccolo trumpets to be the best. Selmer also makes a very good instrument. When I was a professional trumpet player, I used a Selmer. Maurice Andre uses one as well.

Make sure whichever instrument you get that it is both a Bb and A instrument. There should be two mouthpiece shanks that come with the instrument so that it can be converted.

If you are using the piccolo trumpet for Baroque music, you will most often use the A side of the horn, as many high parts are written in D, and the transposition is easier with the A horn. (You just pretend the part is in bass clef, and change the key in your head)

As far as where to buy them in the Chicago area? I am not sure. Northwestern University has an outstanding brass faculty. Call them. They might be able to help.

Canadian Brass brings worldwide reputation to NCC The Courier News

But before he hangs up his horn for good, he'll perform with the legendary group he helped found at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Wentz Concert Hall at North Central College.

Canadian Brass, arguably the world's foremost brass ensemble, was started in Toronto in 1970 with Watts and tuba player Chuck Daellenbach with the vision of playing classical and jazz music on horns. The lineup has changed over the past four decades, and current members include French horn player Jeff Nelsen and the Julliard-trained trumpeters Brandon Ridenour and Chris Coletti.

"We feel like finally we have a new start in the right direction," Watts said of the new trumpet players. "They've been trained the same way, they're friends. It's really nice. It's important for the whole group; if you're friends, that certainly helps."

The Brass tour constantly and do upwards of 100 shows a year, Watts said, although in its heyday they performed 220 shows a year.

"We love what we're doing and who we're doing it with," he said. "I think that shows in the atmosphere of the concert."
