Info on a conn trumpet?
Q: im 15 and in a high school marching band. i want a new b flat trumpet but really dont have the money. at a used instrument shop i saw a brand called conn. i was wondering if you could tell me some info on it or tell me a little something. the shop owner said o yea its great but you never really can trust a sales man!
A: Conn is a reputable brand; how good it is will depend on the model. You're right not to trust the shop owner so much--can you get your band director or brass instrument leader to go to the shop with you and try the thing out? A knowledgeable trumpet player can tell you whether it's gold or dross.
Now, if this one doesn't work out, you might ask your more knowledgeable brass player friends and teachers if they will keep an eye open for a cheap, excellent horn for you.
Another option is to keep looking at the musical instruments on http://www.shopgoodwill.com/ Frequently they have trumpets on there, goodies like Vincent Bach and Besson even--but beware, it's thrift-shop merchandise, some will be terrific and some will be good only for flowerpots. You can buy from them for pennies almost, but have a knowledgeable person look closely at the ad and the pictures, and find out how much your local instrument shop will charge for a thorough cleaning and set-up--save enough money from your budget to pay for things like loosening up tuning slides, etc.
