What is the best way to transpose a french horn part into a trumpet part?

Q: We are doing a Greensleeves arrangement and I have a french horn part but we have a trumpet player. What do we need to do to make the music playable for the trumpet from the french horn part.

A: Is his instrument a C instrument or a Bb instrument?

The French horn part is written a perfect fifth higher than the sounding pitch.
A Bb trumpet part is written a major second higher than the sounding pitch.
A C trumpet part is written as it sounds.

Transpose down a perfect fourth for a Bb trumpet or down a perfect fifth for a C trumpet.

You could put it into the lower trumpet, or possibly bring the horn notes up an octave so that the fit the trumpet more comfortably. If neither of those are accpetable, I would re-write the notes in the horn part, using the same type of motion and creating the same effect, but put write a true trumpet part instead of using the horn part. Essentially, with the last option, you're just using the horn part as a guide. You could always train a trumpet player to play horn, too.

Horn in F ~ the music is written a 5th higher than concert pitch

Trumpet in B flat - the music needs to be written only a major 2nd higher than concert pitch.

Transpose the music down a perfect 4th or up a perfect 5th depending upon which register of the trumpet your instrumentalist is most comfortable with.

Some said it was the best jazz concert they had ever attended. Some said that it just didn’t get any better. Some said the concert was great. Last but by no means least, someone said to me “If this is a sample of the quality of the concerts in the Bayview Room, plan on seeing me at every concert in the future!” You’ll agree I’m sure that compliments such as these are hard to come by. But that’s how it was two Fridays ago in the Bayview Room at the Mahaffey Theater.
Performing in St. Petersburg for only his 2nd time in two years, trumpeter and flugelhorn player James Gibbs, III, was featured in concert. Sharing the frontline with the up and coming jazz saxophonist, 15-year old Jordan Richardson, Gibbs seemed to feed off of Richardson’s playing and vice-versa. Contributing outstanding
