What is the proper embouchure for oboe?
Q: I am a beginning oboist and my band director keeps commenting how I tend to "overbite" on my oboe reed when I play. I have read website sources that say to relax the muscles of your face when playing oboe, and to form the mouth in an "o" shape, but then I play so flat that the note I am trying to play is one half-step flat! Please help and thank you! (:
A: Since the opening of an oboe reed is small, you need to seal the reed and not bite on the reed to allow it to vibrate and allow the air flow through the reed into the oboe. Think of the ant-eater, which is an animal that eats ants, and how the lips are long and comes out and produces a small opening to eat ants. Next time you practice, try to be an ant-eater to your oboe reed and seal your reed by bringing in the corners of your mouth, and see if this helps. pretend like you're saying the word prune- that's how forward your corners of your mouth should be
the flat notes may have to do with air support, try to support your air with your diaphragm, instead of the lungs
