How many different types of flutes are there and what are they?
Q: i was just wondering, if you could tell me the difference, that would be great too! Thanx!
A: Allow me to expand on one section of a previous answer.
The Boehm system flute is a transverse flute (blown sideways) and there are lots of variants on the orchestral C soprano flute. The piccolo (one octave above C soprano), G soprano (major fifth above) , Eb flute (minor third above), then you run into the flute d'Amore (pitched in Bb minor second below), the alto flute (pitched in G; major 5th below) and the bass flute (pitched in C; one octave below). There are tenor flutes and a contrabass flutes and at least 10 others interspersed within these listed.
The concert flute can be closed hole or open hole, be nickel plated, silver plated, solid silver, gold, wood or cermet for the main body, though the keys are usually silver plated, silver or gold. It can have a C foot or B foot.
Your question isn't clear on just what you were looking for in an answer, so I hope I've clarified a little and not confused you with all of this, but there are MANY types of flutes!
You might look up some information on http://www.larrykrantz.com/faqindx2.htm
It is a GREAT website for information on flute stuff!

The Boehm flute is the flute that is prominent in orchestras and is usually made of silver. In this family is also the piccolo, alto, bass flute, etc.
There is the baroque/one keyed flute which was used in the baroque period and is made out of wood typically.
Then there are other flutes: native american, ocarina, japanese, indian flutes, etc.
